Import Word doc to Google Drive

If you want to put a Word (or Excel or Powerpoint) file into Google Drive, you have two options. You can either leave the file as a Word document OR convert it to a Google doc.

  • Option 1 - Leave it as a Word doc. If you do this, you will not be able to edit the file directly in Google Drive. You would need to download the file to your computer and edit it. Then delete the old one and put the new one back in. The benefit is that any formatting you make in Word will be intact.
  • Option 2 - Convert it to a Google Doc. If your Word doc has a lot of formatting, it probably will not look good once it is converted to a Google Doc. You can always try and see what you end up with. If you do convert it to a Google Doc, the benefit is that you can now edit that file directly in Google Drive.

This guide will show you how to upload a Word document without converting it to Google Drive.

Check your settings

First, check your settings. Click the gear in the upper right. Hover over "Upload settings". Make sure the first two things are unchecked and the last thing is checked as in this picture. This means that everything you upload a Word file, Google will ask you what you want to do.

One way to upload a file is to click the upload icon and choose "Files" to upload files or "Folder" to choose an entire folder to upload.

Or drag and drop

Another way to upload files is to go to the folder where you want to put files. Then simply drag and drop files into the center area.

Confirm settings

If you want to leave a Word doc as a Word doc, click "Start upload". If you want to convert it to a Google Doc, click the first check box first.

Upload complete

A box appears showing you the upload. When it's finished, just click the x at the top right to close.

You should now see your Word doc. You will know it's a word doc by the icon before the title.
